What anti-wrinkle injections can and cannot do

Anti-wrinkle injections are the most requested treatment in our clinic, and also the one people have the most questions about. Here is what we cover with patients before their first appointment.

Types of anti-wrinkle injections

Neurotoxin, Dysport, Botox. The terms get used loosely, so it helps to be precise. All anti-wrinkle injections are neurotoxins. Under that heading sit several brands, and we carry more than one so the plan can be matched to the person rather than to whatever is on the shelf.

The brands behave similarly. Some have a slightly quicker onset, some hold a little longer, and the unit measurement is not interchangeable between them. We walk you through the amount we think will work and why. Many patients stay with one brand for years. Others switch and prefer the result. The mechanism, though, is the same across all of them.

How anti-wrinkle injections work

The product blocks the signal that travels from nerve to muscle. The muscle contracts less, and the lines created by that contraction soften over the following days. Less movement in a specific muscle, less creasing in the skin above it.

Benefits worth knowing about

1. Confidence. When expression lines soften, most patients say they simply look rested rather than treated. That is the goal.
2. Prevention. Nothing prevents ageing outright, but keeping a muscle from creasing the same fold thousands of times does slow how deeply that line sets. We are comfortable starting before lines are obvious.

What to expect, and how long results last

At your appointment we discuss your goals, look at how your face actually moves, and review anatomy, budget and brand options. Then we inject using very fine needles. Most patients sit back, close their eyes, and need nothing for comfort.

You can return to your day immediately. Unlike some cosmetic procedures, there is no period of looking worse before looking better. The product takes effect within one to two weeks, sometimes sooner.

For most people, treatment lasts three to five months. We see patients again at two weeks to review the result and adjust if needed, then book the next session so the timing stays consistent and lines do not fully return between visits.
